New Zealand will join Australia in a world-leading satellite technology test-bed.

The New Zealand and Australian Governments will be partners in a two-year trial of Satellite Based Augmentation Systems (SBAS), and an associated programme of trials.

SBAS is expected to improve air navigation, smartphone-based services, asset management and precision agriculture, and is expected to be needed for the deployment of connected and autonomous vehicles.

Current generation SBAS - common in most regions of the developed world
Precise Point Positioning - this technique is use for surveying applications, but is not currently suitable for mobile platforms
Next-generation SBAS - to date this has only been tested in a laboratory so broadcasting this signal via satellite and developing the establishment of the test-bed is considered world leading
The current-generation service is not expected to become operational until late May/June 2017. The next-generation SBAS service will be operational from November 2017.

The Cooperative Research Centre for Spatial Information (CRC-SI) will manage the SBAS test-bed and associated trial programme – New Zealand will have representation on the Steering Group. The CRC-SI will be calling for participation in the test-bed from across nine sectors, including transport, in about March/April.

New Zealand organisations will be able to submit trial proposals direct to the CRC-SI and of course once the service is operational anyone with an SBAS capable receiver (excluding certified avionics) should benefit.
