shaun johnsonShaun is an electrical engineer, with an Associate Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering, who has held a number of technical and leadership roles, across the New Zealand Defence and civil aviation sectors over the past 32 years.

Shaun served as an Engineering Officer, with the Royal New Zealand Air Force, for 27 years. During this time he filled numerous technical support and leadership, including operational deployments to the Solomon Islands and East Timor. Of note, Shaun spent approximately 10 years working in support of capital acquisition projects for the Ministry of Defence, including Engineering Manager for the NH90 helicopter program in France. Shaun also served as the senior aeronautical software certification specialist, Director of Project Engineering and Certification, and the Air Attache to the New Zealand High Commission in Canberra. Shaun retired from the RNZAF as a Wing Commander in 2014.

From 2014 to Sep 2020, Shaun led the aircraft, product and organisational certification teams at the Civil Aviation Authority. He represented the CAA at the annual FAA-Asia/Pacific and FAA-EASA safety conferences and was involved with the development and implementation of a number of bilateral agreements between attending regulatory authorities. Shaun also established the CAA advanced technology certification team and supported the development of a continuing professional development network for aerospace engineers across New Zealand.

In 2005 Shaun was appointed as a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, he is also a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and current President of the New Zealand branch.
