    *********

ITSNZ is excited to be hosting our first event in the city of Tauranga, in partnership with the Transportation Group.

Join us to hear about ITS in Tauranga with Tauranga City Council and Bay of Plenty Regional Council, exploring ITS solutions both active and in the planning stages including:
    – ITS Initiatives for Efficiency and Safety
    – BOPRC Baybus On Demand Trial Update
    – Exploring Time in Use for Tauranga
Read on to find out more about the topics being covered and the great lineup of speakers.

    Topics:

ITS Initiatives for Efficiency and Safety
Tauranga is experiencing rapid population growth, placing an enormous strain on the existing roading infrastructure. With stretched Police resource and an increased focus on safety, TTOC is employing new ITS to help alleviate the issues. Some of these include advanced AI analytics that use existing cameras for LPR, parking enforcement and banned traffic movements. Also, radar-enabled cameras to record speed and to classify vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.

Bus priority is achieved through linking SCATS system with the BOPRC RTI system and the Addinsight origin/destination software assists in predicting traffic congestion in real-time.

BOPRC Baybus On Demand Trial Update
Tauranga’s OnDemand service started in March this year and is now a third of the way through its 18 month trial.  It is providing an affordable shared transport service in Tauranga South, and is proving very popular with the community.

Hear about the impact that this trial is having on travel choices in Tauranga South and how the trial is tracking against its objectives and KPIs, as well as the potential for future OnDemand services in the Bay of Plenty region.

Exploring Time in Use for Tauranga
Funding transport infrastructure is a perennial problem that is growing increasingly challenging with rapid urban growth and inflation. One option that could help to address the funding deficit, improve the efficiency of transport systems and provide environmental benefits by encouraging reduced car use, is to apply a user pays model of road pricing, or time of use charging.

Peter and Craig will present a summary of findings from the TCC and NZTA SmartTrip study undertaken in 2023 which considered road pricing options for Tauranga. They will cover option analysis, anticipated benefits and costs and feedback received from the public through the Long Term Plan engagement.

    Speakers:

    • Richard Easton, Duncan Wilson & Jarrod Levet – Tauranga Traffic Operation Centre
    • Melissa Winters – Bay of Plenty Regional Council
