Congestion Pricing Expert Panel w/ Te Manatu Waka, Auckland Council, CDM Smith & Kapsch Net
ITSNZ hosted a panel of expert speakers congestion pricing and demand management.
Starting with a government update from Te Manatu Waka on the progress on policy towards congestion pricing in New Zealand, our panel explored the drivers and benefits of congestion systems, international examples and their results, and crucially the technology options.
Each panelist made a brief presentation, then following a panel discussion, attendees had the opportunity to ask questions.

Why Congestion Pricing is so important and relevant now
Congestion is not just a cause for anxiety, it is one of the biggest issues facing urban centres, contributing to carbon emissions and health, lost productivity, stress on infrastructure and land use, and equity. Congestion Pricing has the potential to be one of the biggest levers to help us address these issues.
Having been discussed for many years, in August 2021 congestion pricing for Auckland was supported by a cross-party select committee who recommended no trials were necessary.
The implementation and success of the system will be of significant interest to a wide range of stakeholders and vital to its success will be ITS systems, not only for enforcement but also for providing data to manage, grow and improve the system into the future.
