Derek Zhang

Dr. Derek Zhang is a Delivery Manager specializing in Computer Vision at Auckland Transport. He oversees the Computer Vision portfolio and leads a team of AI and Computer Vision experts in the Technology Solutions department. With a PhD in Computer Vision, Derek has been instrumental in leveraging advanced technologies to enhance the city’s digital infrastructure and improve journeys for Aucklanders. Over the years, Derek has built a dedicated team of 18 individuals with strong backgrounds in Computer Vision. This team develops in-house Computer Vision solutions and applies them to Auckland Transport’s extensive CCTV network for traffic monitoring, incident detection, enforcement, and network performance optimization, all aimed at improving urban safety and efficiency.

Derek’s expertise in Computer Vision is complemented by his strong leadership skills, demonstrated through his successful management of cross-functional teams and commitment to agile methodologies. He has played a key role in adopting Scrum of Scrums, ensuring fast and incremental delivery of innovative solutions. His collaborative approach has fostered strong partnerships with key stakeholders both internally and externally. As Auckland Transport’s core Computer Vision capabilities mature, the organization aims to share them with other government agencies.
