Lead Adviser Future TransportWaka Kotahi NZ Transport AgencyIain joined Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency as Lead Adviser Future Transport at the start of 2022. Iain’s role at Waka Kotahi includes working with other teams at the Agency and with external organisations such as Austroads, on the preparations needed for the deployment of connected and automated vehicles along with a range of other transport innovations. He is also involved in the Waka Kotahi Innovation Fund Hoe ki angitū. He has been working on matters relating to ITS and transport technologies since 2012.
Before joining Waka Kotahi, he was a Principal Adviser at Te Manatū Waka Ministry of Transport for nearly 17 years. There he was responsible for developing policies on a wide range of transport issues in areas around the environment, electric vehicles, road safety and technology.
His work has included being the policy lead in a team looking at the deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in New Zealand. He was one of the main authors of the New Zealand Government’s ITS Technology Action Plan 2014–2018. Other projects included helping to develop New Zealand’s guidelines for testing autonomous vehicles and research that secured funding for the much more accurate global satellite positioning system, now branded as SouthPAN.
