Ian Welch

A Tāngata Tiriti academic with British and Irish ancestry, born and raised in Aotearoa New Zealand. Following degrees from Te Herenga Waka and the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, my career has spanned government, Big Four consulting, and healthcare sectors across New Zealand and the UK.

My research sits at the intersection of cybersecurity and emerging technologies, specializing in malicious web page detection, network security enhancement, and IoT threat mitigation. I employ advanced machine learning techniques to develop innovative security solutions with a particular focus on deceptive technologies to counter cybersecurity threats.

I’m particularly invested in human factors in cybersecurity and digital privacy, with attention to local contexts including Māori data sovereignty. My work bridges technical expertise with practical applications, reflecting my commitment to responsible technology development that serves both industry needs and community wellbeing.
