Melanie Muirson
Senior Principal Transportation EngineerStantecMelanie is a Senior Principal Transportation Engineer based in Stantec New Zealand’s Christchurch office.
Melanie is passionate about road safety and the impact that that our profession can have on reducing trauma on our transport networks. In 2022, Melanie was appointed as Stantec’s Technical Practices Leader for Transportation and previously lead Road Safety professionals across New Zealand and Australia in her capacity as Stantec’s Road Safety Practice Leader. With over 27 years’ experience specialising in the road safety and traffic engineering and temporary traffic management, she has worked on infrastructure and network maintenance contracts and capital projects ranging from motorways and state highways through to local urban and rural roads across New Zealand and in Australia. As our society evolves from being car centric to people focussed, Melanie has honed her skills further in the development of safer communities through providing safe and fit for purpose infrastructure for active modes and public transport. Melanie has also contributed to the preparation of business cases assessing the feasibility of maintenance and improvement programmes for transport corridors and has an interest in developing resilient infrastructure that can be safely and rapidly reinstated following a shock event, such as an earthquake.
Melanie has held leadership and management roles in a number of organisations and currently leads or is a member of specialist industry safety and temporary traffic management groups that are administered by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and is a member of the Australasian College of Road Safety NZ Chapter committee. Melanie has previously chaired the Canterbury Association of Consulting Engineers (ACE) NZ Transportation Group and has served on local and national committees for Engineering NZ’s Transportation Group.
