Mike Smith
Mike is a road safety specialist, a Safe Systems practitioner for road networks and road safety development, and a Safety Audit and Network Functionality (SANF) expert. He has an international reputation for road safety, engaging with clients, other consultants, contractors, and government agencies..
The 2011 and 2012 Christchurch earthquakes prompted the New Zealand government to invest in more cycleways. This led Mike to play a significant role in developing the SANF process, which provides a holistic approach to assessing new street designs, considers shared space and user safety—including disability groups—and uses a community-based approach where all road users are considered, to which his multi-modal scheme assessments can testify.
Most mornings Mike goes to work with sand between his toes; as an active patroller for Surf Life Saving New Zealand he’s dedicated to saving lives at the beach as well as on the road.
